  1. We have sent Quetsionaires to 1BDS, 2BDS, final i and final ii students also Academic staff and Nursing/technical/clerical staff.
Today I gave another set for the new entrants.

Out of 75 about 15 have not used computers!
As Dean adviced we can arrange a IT course during the English course.
can I have comments form SeL members here please.

  2. IT course for freshmen. It is better if we consider their exposure and familiarity of their hands on computers when we make groups. It is also worth to include a few experts in each group so that we can promote peer learning and perhaps they will learn in a more comfortable environment.

  3. Fifteen out of 75 havent used a computer..... it is a significant number. Then we may think of introducing the basic IT such as computer usage during the ELTU course period (prior to starting the proper academic work). Anyway our questionnairs will bring us more informations.
But I have seen almost all senior students (after the 1st year) are using the CAL room. They may be catching the IT awareness while being in the university. In the meantime they should be stimulated to use the CAL as far as possible.
In my openion library or the IT centre should start basic IT courses periodically annually so that students can enroll as they need. Our teachning programe (curriculum) and the other projects etc. must encourage the IT usage. Otherwise students will not be interested.

  4. I think it is high time to start the IT course for freshman who are doing the English intensive course. Perhaps they start their 1st BDS course on early October 2009. Shall we talk with ELTU teacher and IT center and fix a time slot in their time table. I think we want to implement this soon.

  5. Since the current programme gives experiences in basic/general computer skills, we can plan some sessions to give hands on how to do Medline surveys (especially research and literature survey). When is good for that? I will talk to Mrs Menaka too, the librarian, reading room.
    Where is the lecture tomorrow?

  6. I have proposed Dean to amalgamate library committee and SeL and to appoint a young member as the convener. Of course I will help you in which way I can.
we have to negotiate with the uni IT center for the extended programme after 3rd August, for which the new committee will be responsible. They will only give us the computer hall.
June 7th Monday 3pm soon after Microbiology lecture at A bldg lecture room we shall talk to second year students on the importance of ICT

  7. Prof Jayantha,
Sir could you please update this blog. The web committee needs some information regarding our e-learning activities. So we can give the web address for that. If you are busy I can do it with your advice.
